2017 Placemat Resource
The story behind this resource started in my second year of teaching when I learned my lesson that I needed an activity for children to do on their first day back at school. I wasn’t prepared for this the previous year. My first few hours in year 3 was a mess. There were parents and children everywhere, children crying and clinging onto parents, parents stressed and not knowing what to do. ARGH! A nightmare for this person who was a nurse only the week before who didn’t know classroom management started right here! It was a very quick introduction to teaching. I was all set and ready for students and parents the next year though. I had the idea to create a placemat that children decorate and write a message on the back to look back on in their last weeks of the school year. I laminated this placemat when I went home on that first day. The kids loved looking back at their work one year on in December. (Sue has developed this placement, however following the same colouring-in format). As my children arrived on the first day of school, I asked them to place their bags in the port-racks and bring in only their colouring-in pencils and manners (they love that one!) I explain the activity to the children, and they are super excited to start colouring and creating their masterpiece. The parents see their child is distracted with work to do, they have been set a task and are quite happy and confident to leave the room knowing their child is engaged and ready to start their day in a positive manner. Making sure you have an activity that children start immediately will instantly set the tone and atmosphere to your classroom environment for the year.
