Meet the Team
Mark has over 37 years of experience in the classroom. He has taught high school Maths for Brisbane School of Distance Education and was seconded to the Department of Educational Training and Employment as a project officer with the Information and Technology Branch later in his career. He has also worked in the building industry and with his business partner worked part and full time in the industry spending several months repairing buildings damaged in the Cloncurry floods of 1990. He has a certificate in Horticulture and a keen interest in agriculture.
Mark was the son of a farmer and with his 3 brothers worked and played hard on the farm overlooking the Kenilworth township. There were 3 other families of 4 boys each so many painful lessons of life were learned early resulting in Mark wearing a reasonable amount of plaster in his early days. He also learned that hard work and attention to problem solving were aspects of everyday life on the farm
After completing his course at North Brisbane College of advanced Education , Mark spent his first year teaching in Kenilworth. He was inspected there and was promoted to a one teacher school in McKinlay. The famous Walkabout Pub that was used in the film Crocodile Dundee was where the townsfolk met and it was here he became acquainted with local chararcters who would further shape his outlook on life. He was inspected and offered a further promotion as Principal of a Class 5 school but decided that teaching was what he wanted to do and from there accepted posting s to Enoggera State School, Wilston State School and Everton Park State School.
Mark introduced online teaching to the children of his mainstream class s through Blackboard and EdStudio. Homework and assignments were uploaded to blackboard and students of similar skills and levels were able to collaborate online in a confident and successful way, improving outcomes for students otherwise struggling in the classroom.
He went on to teach as a Middle Maths teacher for Brisbane School of Distance Education using a variety of programs including Blackboard and Collaborate and from there accepted a position with DETE as a project officer for the Information and Technology Branch where he worked on projects including the Bring Your Own Device initiative. His team were responsible for assisting schools with decision making processes regarding the introduction of 21st century technologies into Queensland classrooms.
Ian has taught in a variety of schools since graduating from The Brisbane School of Advanced Education in the mid 1970s. He has a Diploma of Education as well as a Bachelor of Education.
Ian has taught mainly upper primary in the State School system. His teaching experience also includes a couple of years working in Central Office as an advisor.
The last 12 years of his teaching career were spent as an upper primary/ lower secondary teacher (including a stint as Head of Department) with the Brisbane School of Distance Education based at Coorparoo (the largest school by enrolment in Queensland). This role gave him extensive experience in delivering lessons and support to a wide range of clientele via various methods of online delivery. Ian has worked closely with students and parents/guardians in achieving maximum results for students who are geographically isolated or unable to attend mainstream classes for a variety of reasons.
Ian retired from Education Queensland in 2014 but welcomes the opportunity to be involved in this new, exciting method of student support via the Internet.
Ian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Hot Rock Tutoring.
